Germany – Stricter Indoor PCB Limits: New Assessment for Better Health Protection
Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB) remain present in buildings despite being banned for decades, posing potential health risks through indoor air exposure. A recent reassessment in Germany has found that previous threshold values do not sufficiently protect against PCB’s harmful effects. Previously, the precautionary value under the German PCB guideline was set at 300 ng/m³. The Committee on Indoor Air Guide Values (AIR) has now introduced new limits: 80 ng/m³ as a precautionary level and 800 ng/m³ as a health hazard threshold. These updated limits aim to enhance protection against the long-term effects of PCB exposure.
