The Minamata Convention has entered into force
The Minamata Convention on mercury entered into force on August 16, 2017.
The first conference of the parties took place from September 24 to 29, 2017, in Geneva, Switzerland. 150 countries voted for Geneva as the host city of the Minamata Convention.
The conference also agreed on a range of measures to limit the impact of mercury extraction and industrial usage. A new guideline specifies how atmospheric mercury emissions generated by coal-fired plants, waste incineration plants and cement plants can be reduced.
