PCB Workshops
General information
In our role as International PCB Experts for IGOs (Intergovernmental Organisations) such as UNDP, UN Environment or UNIDO, the World Bank or Governmental Offices and Secretariats (such as the Swiss FOEN and SECO), we organise and hold country-specific PCB Awareness Raising and Capacity Building Workshops worldwide.
Such workshops are held in the respective countries or regions and usually comprise of a theoretical and a practical part.
Theoretical training
The theoretical training provides background knowledge on dangers, uses and fields of application of PCBs. The environmentally sound handling, packaging, temporary storage as well as the safe and sound transport and disposal of PCBs are presented by means of case studies.
References to the relevant conventions and laws, e.g. the Stockholm, Basel and Rotterdam Conventions or the ADR are also part of the programme.
Practical training
Sampling, inventory and labelling of PCB containing equipment as well as risk analysis and safety measures are trained in the theoretical part of the training, and then immediately put in practice during the practical part.
For example, the workshop participants will sample transformers, capacitors, drums or soils on site, record all necessary data and then screen their sample by means of PCB field tests. Within a few minutes they will know whether or not their sample contains PCBs.
The participants will learn to handle PCBs in an environmentally sound manner by using the materials and tools available in the country, according to the motto: “Show them how to do it”.
Whenever possible, NGOs (Non-governmental Organisations) are involved in workshops and training courses. This will provide the NGOs with the necessary knowledge to enhance their role in the project and help them to contribute actively during identification and disposal of hazardous materials in their countries.
Study tours
On request, we can organise customer-specific PCB Study Tours to Switzerland and neighbouring countries. Not only theoretical training sessions, but also visits of PCB treatment and disposal facilities as well as meetings with Environmental Authorities or the Convention Secretariats in Geneva can be part of the programme.
