New Additions to Annex A of the Stockholm Convention
The Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants has added three new chemicals to Annex A, expanding the list of substances targeted for elimination under the Convention to a total of 34. The newly added chemicals are: methoxychlor (a pesticide similar to DDT), Dechlorane Plus (a chlorinated flame retardant), and UV-328 (a UV stabilizer used in plastics).
One of the most challenging aspects remains the identification of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in stockpiles, articles, products, and wastes. This is particularly difficult for countries that solely use these chemicals within their supply chains or in specific products. This matter is also of great importance in the context of the negotiations for the new global instrument on plastic pollution, which started end of May 2023 in Paris.
